Could you? Yes, it's possible, but unfortunately, you'll most likely have to be in the right place at the right time to make it happen. English degrees and people looking for writing/editing positions are a dime a dozen so you'll have to do something to set yourself apart from everyone else.

Put together a portfolio of your best work. Make it better than it already is, then try to make it even better than that. Take that portfolio to every job location you can that has writing/editing work. Fill out applications for other types of work in the meantime.

Be willing to take a relatively menial position and work your way up to doing what you want to do, but always keep your eye open for opportunities that will get you where you want to be.

I think that any formal English education will only help you get a an editing type job. However, you may have to be willing to do other things in addition to just editing, like writing a bit or page layout, etc.

1) We need reforms in elementery and secondary education. Finishing high school is an important thing to address... but it's not enough. We have to focus on every level. Finishing high school doesn't get anyone anything anymore. It certainly doesn't make us competetive, intellectually with other countries. Of course things need to be done to help kids get through high school... but that doesn't mean we can ignore higher education.

2) If you go to school and happen to make a great deal of money... I don't think you should wait the 20 years. However, there are a number of jobs that require a great deal of schooling that pay very little. Social work, teaching... ect... We need people in those positions and they will be unable to pay their loan back that quickly on the salary they pull in.

3) I am more interested raising the bar for everyone. Even if that means we all have to make our own damned pizza. We need to be competitive with the rest of the world... This is a joke of a point.

Education is the only thing that will help end poverty and crime. It is the only thing that will make this country into a true force in the future.

so for your argument number 1, you feel like we should waste our time, money, and effort on kids who drop out of high school rather than reward kids who try to better themselves with post high school education?
the way i feel, if we turn our focus towards keeping kids in high school and turn our backs to college students we are bound to create a future full of mediocre success stories, a future without innovation and societal advancement

Maybe as well as finding what's wrong, maybe we should find out what's right about it also. Rhetoric? No. Both sides of the debate? Yes.

1. Your first point basically says that it is impossible to improve graduation rates. There have been many cases in the past where graduation rates have in fact improved. If kids know that they have a chance to get ahead by going to college, they will have a greater incentive to finish high school. On the other hand, if they know that they have no chance to get a degree because only the children of the rich can get degrees, they are far more likely to drop out. Common sense.

2. Your quote from Obama does not support your summary in point 2, which says that all loans will be forgiven in 20 years. No one is proposing to forgive all loans in 20 years. That's simply your attempt to put words into Obama's mouth.

3. No one is suggesting that EVERY person needs a bachelor's degree. The only suggestion is that MORE people should be able to get bachelor's degrees. By your logic, in any event, we shouldn't require ANY schooling because of supply and demand. The fact is that the more educated the people in this country are, the more we will be able to compete economically with other developed nations, especially China.

I believe that my response is not empty rhetoric. However, because you committed several fallacies, I believe that YOUR arguments were excellent examples of empty rhetoric.

The prime limiter on higher education shouldn't be cost - it should be ability. Even if you made college completely free, as it is in many European countries, not everyone could go.

You are making blanket statements without considering that the things you mock actually work in other parts of the world. The USA isn't everything. Learn from the examples - good and bad - of others.

And Robin Thicke makes an excellent point. We waste billions of dollars a year on the defense industry. Imagine how strong we'd be if we spent that on something productive instead.
