I plan on going to graduate school for psychology immediately after college graduation. I am leaning towards the Psy.d degree over the Ph.d, because I am interested in entering the field of forensic psychology, which seems to me like it involves more practical application instead of research. I am wondering if anyone who has been in a similar situation could shed some light on a few issues. Is it better to go for a master’s and then my psy.d degree, or just go for my psy.d right away? Also, can anyone tell me any well-respected non terminal master’s programs in clinical psychology or general psychology and any well-respected Psy.d programs, preferably nothing like Argosy or Alliant please.

My wife and I have practiced law and have used the services of forensic psychologists. We both are confident that the Ph.D. is a necessary Degree for a good career as a forensic psychologist. The prestige, or at least the perceived prestige, of the Ph.D., rather than a Psy.D., will be important in making yourself appear credible to attorneys, judges, etc.

You will need a doctorate to do forensic work beyond routine evaluations. In any event, holding only a master’s degree will put you at a great credibility disadvantage when there is a Ph.D. on the other side of the case.

It is much better to go directly from undergraduate school into a Ph.D. program so that you will not have to apply to graduate school again when you have earned the master’s degree. Some Ph.D. programs award a master’s degree along the way and some do not.

Your state university is usually the best place to earn a respected Ph.D. at the lowest cost to you. There may be some classes in forensic psychology in your curriculum and you can probably write your dissertation on it, but forensic psychology is often learned in detail in continuing education classes after the doctorate has been earned. Most forensic psychologists also maintain a general practice.

**Most importantly, you need a psychology major, not a minor, to be competitive for admission to a worthwhile Ph.D. program. You will need to change majors, even if it takes an extra year to graduate, if you want to pursue a career in forensic psychology.

My wife and I have been married close to a year she has a 3 year old son from a previous relationship, whom i adore. Like any marraige, like any marraige, things started out great. But im finding out that she is someone, or something, completey different from what i fell in love with. She has become increasingly insecure and jealous. Its to the point where i dont even make eye contact with anyone of the opposite sex because she is constantly watching me. even saying hi to anyone of the opposite sex is a mistake. (that would be her definition of flirting and unfaithfullness). If we leave a party ,or large gathering, I already know what the conversation is going to be about on the drive home. “why were you flirting?” is the topic of the conversation every time.as a result, we have horrible arguments, wich are becoming more and more violent. Im not a violent person, nor have i ever been. I have never once struck her or even come close. I cannot say the same for her however. she has smashed our T.V. and other things and I have been struck , slapped, punched , etc.. I know that as a women she is weaker than me ,physically, so i would never do anything to hurt her intentionally. however ,One time, i held her wrists to stop her from trying to hit me, wich didnt work because she just kicked a certain place, I bruised both her wrists. This was enough for her to threaten to call both the police, her parents , and my parents. I have never been married in the past nor have i any children, but even I know that theres something wrong with the picture.
Nevertheless I was determined to make things work. I quite my job, since she disagreed with my schedule, and moved to a small town to live with her parents for financial reasons. For awhile, things seemed to get better. but it was short lived. shes gone back to her old ways: accusing me of flirting or cheating, breaking things, etc. As a result ive become increasingly jaded. I no longer care for her feelings or needs. Ill help with “our son” and see to his needs and wants, but thats it. Today was the turning point though. She broke to doors, both of wich I will pay for, and ripped up my porfolio for graphic design, and threatened to do more. I confess that at that in those moments I wanted to hurt her, which is why I locked my self in a room in an attempt to cool off (that was one of the doors she kicked in.). I could not simply leave the house, as she would have followed, locked me out, or make a scene for the neighbors. I controlled myself but told her simply that marrying her was a mistake, and one i wont make again. . suprisingly she mellowed out after that, though i feel incredibly guilty for saying that.
she explained to her parents that the damage was her fault and that they would be paid for, leaving out all the details thankfully. I have come to the conclusion that staying with her is unhealthy for either of us and that i will have to leave her, somehow without her knowing as she would not allow it.
The problem is that both my family and her are extremely religious, and divorce and or seperation is out of the question. My family would disown me if I ever took that step, believing that marraige is sacred and that the only valid reason for a divorce is infidelity. To top this off, her son calls me dad and it will break my heart to never see him again.

Regardless of all this I am determined to leave and am prepared for the consequences. My plan is to stick it out as long as i can while having a portion of my checks sent to a seperate bank account. In this way i can save money and one day just dissapear to start a new life.
Or i could stay with her as long as it takes to obtain my associates degree in graphic design, I already have a liscense as a CNA so regardless of where i move within my state ill be able to support myself
.

I a part of me still loves her but i feel leaving is the better decision.

So..after all that. My question is this:
Does anyone have any advice on how i should go about getting out of this situation?
I know I said i am determined to leave, but if someone has a better idea i am open to any suggestions.
What if they file a missing persons report if I just dissapear altogether?
Her child is from another relationship, and i have not yet adopted him. But are there any laws that might come back to haunt me when I leave him as well?

I appreciate any input. thanks again
just for the record. both her and my family were raised Jehovah’s Witnesses. I know more about the bible than anything else. I know the bible states quite simply that “God hates a divorcing”. and this particular religion does not tolerate a divorce PERIOD. which is why i would be disowned. I am babtized and am aware of the consequences. But If this is the life that god wishes for me then its not i god i want to be associated with.

WELL OFCOURSE YOUR GONNA HAVE TO LEAVE HER ASAP…..AND I WOULD SAY DO IT WHILE SHE IS GONE IF YOUR LEAVING THE HOUSE CAUSE IT WILL BE TROUBLE IF YOU DO IT WHEN SHE IS THERE AND IF YOU WANT HER TO LEAVE THEN CALL THE POLICE DEPT AND HAVE HER REMOVED THATS SIMPLE ENOUGH GOOD LUCK

As a result of the past twelve years of drama and trauma in my life – a life time of panic disorder and depression I also have chronic fatigue syndrome, high blood pressure, diabetes, and sleep apnea.

It’s an effort to just get out of bed many days and there is no way I can hold down a job let alone one at some discount store’s pace. The idea of having to go to school to get a license to teach in this state and having to be somewhere every day fills me such dread I can scarcely breathe.
My husband makes a living but just enough to pay our bills not the 5 or 6 hundred dollars a month that my student loan holders are asking. I keep filing a forbearance but for I can’t do that forever. He wasn’t even in the picture when I was in school. I will never pay that much money off before I die!! I am scared to death. which is not helping my depression.
I try to paint, do pottery, give lessons and knit to make money but I just can’t seem to sell anything of consequencece. I love my stuff but no one else seems to.

My question is (finally) Is there any kind of program that I can submit to to help me out? I thought college was the best thing for me when I started at the age of 38 graduating seven years later with two bachelors and one masters degree. I love teaching But it has not worked out for me. I am mad at my advisers and my college for not counseling me better. They were ecstatic to take my money and my student loans but offered me no advice of my not making any money with the three degrees. In fact I was talked into going more to get the second bachelors. I lost my two jobs teaching adjunct in community colleges because mine is not a terminal Degree.

Please don’t judge me harshly I am a product of my phobias and disorders. I’ve lived this my entire life. I stretched beyond my limits to go to college and work those 12 years that I worked, but I don’t know if I have it in me to pick up again enough to work a daily grind. Yes I can work from home, I can do art when I have the energy and strength, but I am struggling to keep it together with these loans looming over me and getting bigger every year. And at 83 years of age my parents need me at any given moment to do any given thing.

You have a few options but all of them include working:

-become a grade school or HS teacher in a low income area. After 5 years the federal gov’t will forgive 100% of your loans
-get a job and pay the loans
-ask your husband to pay the loans.
-get a job and get into counceling for your issues and pay your loans

You were well enough to go to school, you should be well enough to work. You are looking for an easy way out and there isn’t one.

You are blaming everyone but you. I was 22 when I started school. I was a bit naive about things – not realizing until I was furthing in that the schools JOB is to get students to give them money, that I actually have to pay back the student loans, that I am not going to make the income everyone ‘promised’ etc….

But I figured it out w/ in 2 or 3 years. You were 38 when you went back to school….and you are blaming others for your failure?

If you were strong enough to go to school you are strong enough to work.

Stop blaming others and live up to your responsibility.

I guess you could just never pay them since you never plan on working. Just make sure the house is not in your name, although I am not sure if they could seize your house.

Maybe you can do jail time instead of paying your loans, since you are not working or doing anything anyway.
